There's a lot of buzz around Saint Maud, A24's upcoming horror film. Written and directed by Rose Glass, is a terrifying tale of faith and madness about a hospice nurse going to extremes to save the soul of her doubting patient. Preliminary reports say that this is going to be the next big horror movies and another win for A24's impressive record of horror movies (Hereditary, Midsomar, The VVitch, etc) with a star performance by Morfydd Clark as the disturbed nurse Maud.
To celebrate the release, AMC theaters are hosting a series of screenings called "She Is Risen." Focusing on female-fronted horror movies with a strong emphasis on faith, the film series starts on Friday, March 13th.
The first film in the series is William Friedkin's The Exorcist, the classic horror film about a little girl possessed by a devil and the priests struggling to free her soul.
The second film, which screens on March 20th, is Roman Polanski's Rosemary's Baby. One of the iconic films of the 1960s, this claustrophobic tale of urban paranoia features a young woman whose baby may be the Antichrist.
The final film in the series, which screens on March 27th, is The Conjuring. Directed by James Wan, this movie is about a husband-and-wife team of paranormal investigators who seek to free a beleagured family from the spirits that torment them.
Finally, the film series culminates with the premiere of Saint Maud on April 1st. This will be mainstream audiences' first chance to see a film that has already been hailed as a modern classic during its run on the festival circuit.
From the synopsis:
Maud is a reclusive young nurse whose impressionable demeanour causes her to pursue a pious path of Christian devotion after an obscure trauma. Now charged with the hospice care of Amanda, a retired dancer ravaged by cancer, Maud's fervent faith quickly inspires an obsessive conviction that she must save her ward's soul from eternal damnation, whatever the cost.
