There aren't a lot of popular Halloween themed songs out there, but a popular favorite that gets dragged out of the cemetery every year is "The Monster Mash," Bobby Pickett's novelty song about a dance crazy for the monsters of film land. Created by Pickett when he imitated silver scream icon Boris Karloff, this song tells the tale of a mad scientist who creates a creature of darkness who surprises his creation with sick dance moves. It's a catchy little tune with lots of foley sound effects of coffins opening and wolves howling and very quotable lines like "whatever happened to my Transylvania Twist?"
The song has become a favorite for generations and has been re-recorded by performers like Alvin and the Chipmunks, the Misfits, Vincent Price, Bootsy Collins, and Buckethead. But it never got the same quality a cappella treatment as this performance by MC6.
