Watch singer Jane Zhang perform The Diva's Fifth Element song, once deemed impossible to sing

This talented singer breathed life into one of the most dynamic moments in science fiction.

One of the most iconic scenes in all science fiction is the performance by the alien opera singer in The Fifth Element (1997), Luc Besson's imaginative classic about love and hope and laser guns. In the scene, opera singer Plavalaguna (which means which means ‘ blue lagoon ‘ in Serbian) performs a beautiful operetta that turns into an energetic dance turn. French actress Maïwenn Le Besco performed as the Diva Dance Opera was actually sung by Albanian opera singer Inva Mula-Tchako.

The song composer Eric Serra once revealed in an interview that Mula told him that it was impossible to hit some of the notes in the song because a human voice couldn’t change so quickly between them. She recorded the individual notes and they were digitally combined for the song.

Well, singer Jane Zhang was able to perform it live without digital alteration. The talented performer, whose English-language debut is being produced by Timbaland, did a beautiful rendition of the song. The real impressive vocal work, with the large note changes, happens at the 3 minute mark.
